What are the Engineering Games?
The Quebec Engineering Games competition is a major event which promotes team work and the sharing of knowledge among fellow students. The spirit of this university experience lies in the desire to create connections between:
- Engineering students from all over Quebec
- Industry representatives and professionals operating in a field related to engineering
The Quebec Engineering Games set their objectives as:
- Give the opportunity for undergraduate university students in engineering to test and develop their ability to solve practical problems, to design, to communicate efficiently and to work in a team
- Support proactive students in the field of engineering
- Promote cooperation and interaction between the students, the industry, the government and the university network
This competition is part of the various activities supported by the Confédération pour le Rayonnement des Étudiants en Ingénierie du Québec (CRÉIQ), which regroups student associations of different teaching institutions in the field of engineering in Quebec. This year, the 20th edition of the Games will take place from the 3rd to the 7th of January 2010 at Université Laval, and will be attended by 11 delegations from all over Quebec. Over 400 students representing all the engineering faculties in Quebec will be present at the Games.
Machine Competition
The machine competition of the Engineering Games is by far the most prestigious and mediated event of all the Games’ competitions. This competition is prepared long before the Games and requires a significant amount of time and effort from the participants. All will agree when they see the final products that every machine is the result of hard work and dedication. Each year, the event consists in designing and constructing an entirely automated machine that has to interact with its surrounding and that has to execute a pre-determined task, while respecting very strict rules.
Academic Competitions
The academic competitions are divided into six categories:
- Mechanical Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Computer Engineering
- Chemical Engineering
- Civil Engineering
- Génie Humain
These events bring together specialized teams which must show creativity and fast execution to respond to the evaluation criteria of their respective field. These competitions can take the shape of a simulation, a laboratory experiment or the resolution of a hypothetical situation.
Sports Competitions
These competitions last eight hours and are held indoors and outdoors It is the perfect occasion for sport enthusiasts to show off their athletic abilities. However, every sport is modified with the addition of a handicap in order to keep the competition fair between all the participants.
Debate
The famous debate will be back this year stronger than ever. Efficient communication skills, in the industry, have become a first class asset. Thus, students possessing the best aptitudes in communication and presentation of arguments will face each other in subjects related to current issues of the engineering field.
Génies en Herbe
The participants must dig deep in their general knowledge and use their quickness of wits. The delegations will face off again this year in a series of playoff style games. The grand finale of the event will be presented in front of all the delegations.
Génie Improvissimo
This competition will offer a challenge to the participants on how quick they can think on their feet. The rules are very strict and are inspired by those used in the LNI (Ligue Nationale d’improvisation).
